Dream's empathic abilities were often off putting, but sometimes they were helpful. She saw the look in Emma's eyes - she wasn't sure how to play this game with someone who played by a different set of rules...

"Nobody said i wasn't scared of you," she laughed, "you could take us all down with a twitch of your little finger." The smile on her face was a timid one, but she did laugh, not the pixie laugh you might expect from someone pretty like her but a deeper, heartier laugh...wearing by age and heartache.

Dream's instinct was to make it real for Emma - make her dream happen right there. But she restrained herself.
"I could give you that dream - but that's not why you want me. That's why I'm so scared of you. You've lost your deepest, most human desires for your dreams to come true. Not that you've given up hope - you just don't want it. What you do want is to mess with other people...
What I don't understand..." said Dream getting vulnerable, "is you KNOW I won't cooperate with you. I won't use my powers for your dark purposes. And you know you can't make me...so what are you doing here? Why do you want to do with me?"

And I have no ulterior motives.." she sighed and shook her head, lying down, letting the sun warm her whole body while still feeling the cool concrete against her back.

She saw Emma turn her head, and start to protest. "And don't lie. We can both read minds, and you know that I can see, at least some of what's in yours..."
It was true, Dream couldn't hear thoughts, but she could read emotions and desires, which was almost better. Clearer, like flowing water. Pure mind readers tended to get muddled up...
