"Well I'm serious. You either have to stay, and give an inch, or leave. It's up to you."

Zombie knew she did care. Just not in the way she was supposed to. She cared about other people, not Dream though. And a few others. But not the ones who are so cowardly afraid of her. And those who she had thought was her friend.

"Your call. What's it going to be?"

Jack had been passing by when he'd heard Zombie's voice and felt a tug of emotions from behind Jean Grey's office door. Uncertainty, anger, and fear. He pushed the emotions away. They weren't his, he shouldn't feel them. He stayed, though. He edged closer to the door and heard the conversation. "...give an inch, or leave. It's up to you." There was a long silence and then "Your call. What's it going to be?"
Leave? Zombie was leaving? Where? Why? Was something wrong? He stayed by the door, listening, waiting for Zombie's answer.

"Zombie, please. You must learn compassion. Don't let your sadness and anger blind you. Don't be angry at Dream for her powers - she didn't choose them any more than I did mine - or you did yours. She cares about you. Please, just meet me half way. But I can't make you. Now's the time to choose."

"I'll let her be. But I won't like it. And I still might leave." Said Zombie stubbornly. "They understand back in France." She said, mostly to herself in a light whisper. She didn't want to show it, but she felt horrible.

"Thank you Zombie. But I hope that you'll learn to like it. Let me know how I can help you. Talk to me."

"Yeah. Sure." Said Zombie shrugging and walking towards the door. She turned the handle and opened it half way then turned to look back at Dr. Grey. "Thanks." She said and then turned opening the door to see...Jack?!?
She got pissed. Had someone been listening in on their conversation? That was private, not somehting someone wanted to hear. "Were, you... spying?" She asked him giving him a hard look.

Jack stared at Zombie blankly. He wasn't sure what she meant by spying, so he gave the most honest answer he could think of. "I heard your voice and listened." He glanced away nervously, then looked back at her. Face a complete blank, he asked flatly, "Are you going away?"

"Maybe. Not a word!" Said Zombie to him, hoping he got the point that she didn't want anyone to know. It was Private, and wasn't something she wanted everyone to hear about. That they might have broken her down. It was too embarrassing. And with that she turned down the Hall and started to walk away.

He didn't talk to people anyway, so her secret was safe enough. He was about to follow her. Judging by the emotions he felt from her, she'd feel better if he did. He didn't though. He stepped into the office and looked at Jean Grey. "Good morning." He forced out. It took him over a minute to speak up again. "Do you think... maybe you could help me out? I had another dream." He was scared after the first time she'd attempted to pry his memory and he'd freaked out at her, but this dream was so real he was sure it would work this time. "I could always come back later, if you're busy..."

"Never too busy" said Jean with a smile. "Tell me all about it."

Jack already regretted speaking up, but if it would solve his past, he'd do anything. He fidgetted and finally managed to talk, though in a quiet tone with a cracking voice.
"We-well... I can't remember the whole thing... but... I know that there was no fire... like all the other ones." He closed his eyes, trying to recall the fading images. "There was water. A lot of it, all around me. It was dark and it was burning me, but I was breathing. And there was a sound from far away... I don't know what it was." He stopped. He knew the sound had been like a voice, low and warbled through the water, or whatever it was. He shook his head and stared at the floor. "That's all I remember." He lied. He didn't want to finish. Despite his curiosity, he was too scared to remember.

Jean smiled. "Jack, I know what you want me to do - you want me to read your memories, drag your past out. But Prof. X is right - it would be dangerous if I did. It will come out, in the right time. Have you talked with Logan? He might be able to help you, after all, he went through the same thing."

"I know." Jack said, relieved as much as he was disappointed. That was part of the reason Logan was the only person he trusted. "I just... I can never find him, and even when I do, I don't know what to say." The guy was always disappearing. "Maybe..." He started up. "Maybe if you see him, you could ask him for me?" No matter how much he trusted Wolverine, the guy was intimidating.
